day 9--Portland Lighthouse

On day 9, we drove up the coast to Portland, Maine. We weren't that impressed with the city itself, but we got an awesome deal on this old hotel in the middle of the city. It was built in 1927, and still holds its old-feel charm, with huge rooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, chandeliers in the halls, and top-notch service.
After checking in, we went to see our next lighthouse: The Portland Headlight, Maine's Oldest Lighthouse. It has guided ships safely into Portland Harbor for 218 years. George Washington signed the commission for the first keeper who was not apid a salary for two years.


Though we weren't allowed inside the tower because it's still a working lighthouse, I felt close to it just the same:
